Several streets in District 1 have been closed so that pedestrians, cyclists and joggers can exercise safely in a socially distanced fashion. We have seen these roads also provide a place for children to play outside and, especially along Ocean Beach, as a venue for civic engagement.

Imagine, though, if we were to keep these people-oriented routes long-term! This is not an untested idea - for instance, in Vancouver, Seattle and Portland, even before COVID-19, roads had been closed to non-local traffic to calm residential neighborhoods, improve safety, and provide walking and bike infrastructure.
